Monothelitism: (from monos and thelein ‘to will’) doctrine recognising the existence of one ‘will’ in the incarnate Christ beyond the duality ofHis natures (see monophysitism); a compromise formula put forward during Heraclius’ reign and condemned by the sixth ecumenical council held in Constantinople (680–1)
