Kommerkiarioi: Fiscal officials responsible for state-supervised commerce and the taxes thereon. During the 7th and 8th centuries had a much expanded role in the fiscal system and (probably) the supplying of the armies; from the middle of the 8th century reverted to chiefl y commercial functions.
