Romania: ‘land of the Romans’ (i.e. Byzantines); by the seventh century, a term for the Christian empire of the east; from the thirteenth century, glossary 901 used of the former lands of the Byzantine empire which had been partitioned and were being governed by the Venetians, Franks and other westerners.
